Being blind is no excuse
Have you ever noticed how some people stand out in a crowd? They have this aura of determination and grit that somehow draws your attention to them. These are the people who have the power to change the world – and Mirjana Krisanovic from Sweden is such a person.
When Mirjana Krisanovic was 14 years old she reached a turning point in her life. One early morning she was standing on the diving board at swim practice and her life changed. The teacher had brought the students to the swimming pool where everyone should learn to jump from the 1 meter diving board. When it was Mirjana’s turn she froze. The fear of jumping got a hold of her and she could not move. Standing there on the wet and cold board the only thing she could hear were the other kids mocking her.
Looser, they Shouted
“You can’t do it”; “Looser” they shouted at her. Kids are cruel and the words hurt but still Mirjana could not move. Then suddenly in this cacophony of mocking voices she heard something else.
“Come on Mirjana, you can do it. The fear is only in your head”. It was her teacher believing in her.
Somehow the teacher’s words ignited a spark within Mirjana. Resolutely she turned around and backed away from the diving board. The kids around her laughed even harder now believing Mirjana had given up. But she certainly had not. She stepped down; walked over to the highest jump board in the swimming pool – you know the one that goes all the way up to the ceiling – and jumped!
This would be a very brave move for anyone, however, one thing makes Mirjana’s story amazing; she lost her eye sight four years earlier.
In Your Face
The most important daring moments of our lives are rarely comfortable and this jump certainly was not. In her own words: “It hurt really badly because I landed on my stomach.” But the pain was not her first thought; ”as I swam to the ladder I thought: In Your Face – don’t tell me what I can and cannot do !” And from that moment Mirjana’s life took a strong and different turn.
Almost 10 years have passed since that day at the swimming pool. Today Mirjana is busy studying and finding new ways of challenging herself: One day she is caving (exploring caves) and the next she is climbing walls. She is also a devoted speaker.
Overcoming Your Fear
Mirjana are often invited to schools and organizations to give talks on her vital message: “Fear is in Your Head and it is possible to overcome it”.
As a little girl Mirjana’s blindness gave her a feeling of hopelessness, but now she regards it as strength. When asked if there is anything she cannot do she hesitates before answering: “Yes, I am sure there is. I am realistic off course. Let me get back to you on that…”
Overcoming your fears is not only a strong message it is also a way of life.
The Sky is the Limit
In April Mirjana takes on her next adventure. She travels to Nepal to climb the Mountain Tsergo Ri. Next on her list is bungee jumping in New Zealand. She dreams about working with movies and having already made her first documentary she has taken the first step towards her goal.
Sponsors are Welcome
On most of her adventures Mirjana Krisanovic need a companion with her to be her eyes. This makes all her travels extra costly. Luckily she has sponsor agreement with some companies
but are always looking out for new contacts.
She will also be joining me when I go parachuting in May showing everyone that only the sky is the limit.
