Embrace the Unknown
Being all by her self on the South African roads Annette Birkmann finally learned to accept herself, to embrace the unknown and accept what life presents to you.
She asks the hard question: What if the very thing we are looking for in life actually already is here – within us and in this very moment? All the freedom and happiness that we have been looking for and trying so hard to achieve already is surrounding us. All we have to do is to just stop for a second and embrace it.
Perusing a life long dream
Annette Birkmann decided to make a change in life. She was 31 years old, had a growing carrier as a layer and was living the good life. But she decided to sell all her belongings, quit her job as a layer and go to South America to drive on a motorcycle. This was pursuing a lifelong dream.
What if the very thing we are looking for in life actually already is here – within us and in this very moment? All the freedom and happiness that we have been looking for and trying so hard to achieve already is surrounding us.
In Argentina she bought her first motorcycle and named it Senor Dakar. After some months of volunteering on a motorcycle shop in Buenos Aires Annette Birkmann took of on a journey that lasted a year. She traveled through long roads just her, her bike, and her thoughts.
However she soon discovered that this journey was just as much about a inner journey as it was a geographical one.
She realized that no matter how far away you travel from your home you cannot escape from your thoughts. No matter where she was – there was always her thoughts in her head. And that is where she realized that she also needed to do this other journey in her mind.
The Courage to be True to Yourself
During her South American journey Annette Birkmann realize how her life would be if she had the courage to be true to herself. That included having the guts to leave her comfort zones behind and try out some of the things she always dreamed of doing: Learn Spanish, visit South America and learn to drive a motorcycle.
Along the way she understood how she had built all her life on a foundation of security that all depended on factors outside herself; Big titles on her business card, possessions and even her marriage.

‘If nothing goes wrong on your adventure you will have nothing to talk about when you get back home’. Annette Birkmann has a lot to talk about.
The road to finding herself took Annette Birkmann through 53.000 kilometers through cold deserts and beautiful landscapes. She experienced rough weather and loneliness as well as the unexpected friendliness from strangers.
Famous last words
One of the friends she meets on her journey give her these words as they say good bye: Remember – that if nothing goes wrong on your adventure you will have nothing to talk about when you get back home’
Rest assured – Annette Birkmann has a lot of stories to share with you in her book.

Great post. I’m confronting a couple of these issues.
Good day! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog.
Is it hard to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal
but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about setting
up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you
have any tips or suggestions? Cheers
Hi – yes at little off topic 🙂 Setting up a blog is fun. How long time it takes depends on how technical you are and if you can get any help to the hairy stuff. I spend a lot of time on Google and Youtube watching tutorials. There are plenty of blogs with the topic of how to start a blog. If you just type in ‘how to start blogging’ you should get all the help you need.
Good luck
